mid-range porcelain and stoneware clay bodies with underglaze and glaze (2023/24)
For this series of sculptures, wall pieces and pots I am considering entrances, exits and apples. The wall pieces are abstract portals to places unknown. The portal and the pomme. A door and an apple. A place to start in a real sense and perhaps a biblical one. An opening, a lesson, a path, some sustenance, a search, a revelation. During the spring of 2023-winter 2024 I ducked into the studio whenever possible, here are the fruits to share – my hope is to find and relate abundance whenever I can. This is a core belief for me – always giving and taking and giving, doors opening and closing, blossoms growing and dying, and seeding again.
During the spring of 2023 my mother experienced a series of strokes and my role as her daughter shifted. Suddenly I became a caregiver, scheduler, accountant, mediator and the list goes on. Art making has been an essential aspect of my life since I was a young girl. My mom gave me pens and napkins to draw on in diners. Mark making as a child translated into creative pursuits in college where I found ceramics. I’ve been messing around off and on for over thirty years with the magical mud.
